Among the world’s leading sculpture parks, Storm King Art Center showcases more than 100 sited sculptures on 500 acres of fields, hills, and woodlands. Founded in 1960, this unique open-air museum presents the largest collection of contemporary outdoor sculpture in the United States. The Center recently completed a $53 million capital renovation project designed to enhance the visitor experience and reaffirm the Center’s dedication to community, accessibility, and sustainability.
To advance key site improvements, VHB provided integrated civil and traffic engineering services, including a newly constructed parking area designed to double parking capacity. The new lot features ADA-accessible pathways, 12 electric vehicle charging stations, and dedicated bus and rideshare drop-off zones. VHB’s work involved detailed traffic analysis and highway/roadway design in compliance with the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), guided by historical visitor data and predictive analytics to optimize circulation and capacity.
Beneath the parking area, VHB also engineered an advanced septic system that efficiently manages wastewater while minimizing environmental impact, addressing the site’s challenging topography and proximity to the Moodna Creek. Additional upgrades include a conservation studio and support building to support year-round production by international artists, and a new state-of-the-art visitor welcome area. These enhancements not only improve visitors’ comfort but also amplify Storm King’s capacity to provide hospitality to all.
Previously, VHB supported a master planning effort which identified areas to accommodate future art installations while extending the environmental stewardship mission of Storm King.
