In 2016, Children’s National Health System signed an agreement with the U.S. Army to accept the transfer of nearly 12-acres from the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center campus in northwest Washington, DC. Since then, Children’s National has repositioned the property and rehabilitated existing historic buildings to create a world-class research hub focused on biomedical research as well as pediatric and adolescent primary care. VHB designed the civil infrastructure necessary to support the long-term redevelopment of the site and guided the team through the complex DC regulatory and approvals process. Our team addressed the site’s challenges and the integration of new infrastructure, including an innovative stormwater management system and new utilities, with aging systems. VHB also helped secure a zoning text amendment that will enable Children’s National to continue future development at the site more easily. The new research and innovation campus brought renewed life to the Walter Reed campus, while maintaining the site’s historic significance as a military and research campus. This development is providing significant economic benefits to the community in the form of jobs and tax revenue.
