VHB is excited to collaborate with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and community stakeholders in undertaking the Maurice J. Tobin Memorial Bridge Long-term Strategic Planning Study, also known as the Tobin Bridge Planning Study. This crucial project aims to study and develop alternatives for the future replacement of the iconic Tobin Bridge, which continues to serve the community effectively while addressing contemporary needs. As one of the vital arteries in the regional transportation network, the Tobin Bridge spans more than two miles, connecting Route 1 across the Mystic River between Chelsea and Charlestown. Constructed nearly 75 years ago, the bridge provides essential connectivity for millions of commuters, most recently accounting for an average of 87,000 vehicles per day. However, the aging infrastructure presents sustainable mobility opportunities that necessitate thoughtful consideration of its eventual replacement.
Enhancing Mobility and Accessibility
Our partnership with MassDOT will focus on comprehensive evaluations of existing conditions and future opportunities, enabling us to develop conceptual alternatives for a new crossing that not only replaces the existing bridge but also enhances mobility and accessibility for all modes of travel. This effort represents an opportunity to rethink regional transportation, providing a path to sustainable, resilient, and equitable transit solutions.
A particular emphasis will be placed on improving multimodal travel options, incorporating pedestrian pathways, bike lanes, and enhanced public transit routes. The current lack of sidewalks and bicycle accommodations on the Tobin Bridge limits transportation choices for local residents and stands in contrast to contemporary goals for sustainable mobility. The project will also seek to promote ways to reconnect communities and neighborhoods that have been impacted and physically divided by the existing bridge. By focusing on these communities, the Tobin Bridge Planning Study aims to enhance access to essential resources like jobs, healthcare, and recreational facilities, fostering economic development, enhancing public health and addressing past inequities.

An integral component of our approach is robust community engagement. The public is invited to an informational meeting to be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. This forum will provide a platform for community members to learn more about the study, ask questions, and share their perspectives on the future of the Tobin Bridge.
