Boston, MA

May 06, 2026

VHB is proud to announce our selection as the lead designer in partnership with our contractor partner Skanska-Koch JV, for the MBTA’s North Station Draw One Bridge Replacement and Associated Track & Signal Upgrades project—one of the most critical infrastructure investments in the Greater Boston rail network. Delivered through a design-build approach, this collaboration integrates design and construction capabilities to advance a complex, high-impact project.

Together, VHB and Skanska-Koch JV will replace the existing 1930-era bascule bridges, a vital rail link into North Station, with new vertical lift spans that will significantly modernize rail operations and enhance reliability. The project also includes major track, signal, and Positive Train Control (PTC) upgrades along the corridor, as well as improvements at North Station to enhance system performance.

We are joined by an exceptional team of subconsultants, including Modjeski & Masters, Burns Engineering, and Haley & Aldrich, bringing nationally recognized professionals in movable bridge design, rail systems, and geotechnical engineering.

This investment will deliver meaningful public benefits, including increased rail capacity, improved service reliability, reduced congestion, and enhanced resilience for one of the region’s most heavily used transportation corridors—supporting economic growth and more sustainable mobility across Greater Boston.

We are honored to partner with the MBTA and our project team to help shape the future of transportation in Massachusetts.
