Mount Sinai South Nassau (MSSN) proudly celebrated its ribbon cutting for the highly anticipated expansion of its Emergency Department, now dedicated as the Feil Family Pavilion and Fennessy Family Emergency Department. In partnership with MSSN, VHB helped deliver this transformative four-story, 90,000-square-foot expansion to MSSN’s Oceanside campus. This $130 million expansion, supported by a landmark use of FEMA grants and funding, is set to revolutionize healthcare services for the South Shore community, enhancing access to vital emergency and critical care.
With an increasing demand for emergency and critical care, the new southwest campus addition has doubled the size of MSSN's Emergency Department, adding 40 more critical care beds and nine new operating suites. These enhancements will provide the community with quicker access to vital medical services and improve overall patient care. The expansion also features key additions like the Field Family Pavilion, a central utility plant, and various surface parking lots.
VHB has been instrumental since the project began in 2017, managing crucial aspects of the project from initial master planning stages through to completion. The team provided integrated services, including traffic engineering, environmental planning, and civil engineering, along with parking, stormwater, air quality, noise, and land use assessments. VHB also managed the SEQRA process and prepared the Environmental Impact Statement.
One of the noteworthy challenges VHB overcame was maintaining access to the existing emergency department throughout construction, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. VHB worked closely with the hospital and architectural teams to develop effective phasing plans, supporting the hospital’s ability to remain fully operational and safe for patients.
"Delivering a project of this scale while maintaining full hospital operations during a pandemic required ingenuity and collaboration. We're thrilled to see the Feil Family Pavilion and Fennessy Family Emergency Department open its doors and provide enhanced care to the community," said Angelo Laino, Project Manager at VHB, who attended the ribbon cutting.
The next phase of the project is entering construction, and a new parking garage is anticipated to be completed by early 2026. The Feil Family Pavilion and Fennessy Family Emergency Department will provide the South Shore community with improved access to top-tier emergency and critical care services, raising the standard of healthcare in the region and expanding the hospital's ability to meet future demands.
