Among the world’s leading sculpture museums, Storm King Art Center in Orange County, NY, proudly celebrated its ribbon cutting with the completion of its inaugural capital project—a transformative $53 million renovation, designed to significantly enhance the visitor experience. The improvements reaffirm Storm King Art Center’s dedication to community, accessibility, and sustainability.

At the heart of these renovations lies a state-of-the-art visitor welcome area, meticulously designed with modernized ticketing operations, a brand-new restroom complex, and an outdoor lobby framed by native plantings. These enhancements not only improve visitor comfort but also amplify Storm King’s capacity to provide warm hospitality to all.

VHB provided integrated civil and traffic engineering services to advance key site improvements, including a newly constructed parking area designed to double Storm King’s parking capacity while replacing two lots formerly located within the grounds. The new lot features ADA-accessible pathways, 12 electric vehicle charging stations, and dedicated bus and rideshare drop-off zones, supporting Storm King’s goals for accessibility and sustainable transportation. VHB’s work involved detailed traffic analysis and highway/roadway design in compliance with the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), guided by historical visitor data and predictive analytics to optimize circulation and capacity.

Beneath the parking area, VHB also engineered an innovative septic system that efficiently manages wastewater while minimizing environmental impact, addressing the site’s challenging topography and proximity to the Moodna Creek. Additional site upgrades include a conservation, fabrication, and maintenance building to support year-round production by international artists. This new space expands creative capacity and enhances Storm King’s role as a global cultural destination.

"This capital project is a milestone in sustainable development, highlighting Storm King’s commitment to green infrastructure and community engagement,” said Chris Longo, Director of Engineering at VHB. “We’re proud to work on a project that revitalizes the landscape and deepens the connection between people, art, and nature."

Visitors can explore Storm King Art Center’s expansive 500-acre landscape, recently opened in May for the season. With these improvements, Storm King is poised to welcome a broad audience from near and far while preserving the serene, artistic ambiance that defines its legacy.
