The Vermont Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA VT) recognized VHB at the 2025 Public Places Awards, which celebrate special public spaces that have been defined or enriched by design or planning.

Our Middlebury Bridge and Park project won the Honor Award. Judges highlighted the project’s complex circulation networks, thoughtful and engaging public park and streetscape design, and increased accessibility as contributing factors to their decision. Vermont Director of Landscape Architecture Michael Willard, Senior Public Involvement Consultant Jim Gish, and Vermont Chief of Design Mark Hamelin attended the ceremony to accept the award.
“We’re honored to receive this award,” said Mark. “This project has been transformational for Downtown Middlebury and will continue to enhance connectivity, mobility, and accessibility in the community.”
The Middlebury Bridge and Park Project replaced deteriorated bridges in downtown Middlebury with a single 350-foot-long rail tunnel and reclaimed the central Town Green, which was lost to rail construction 180 years earlier. The restored Town Green has energized the community by providing a welcoming space that promotes social interaction, community cohesion, and improved accessibility.
