Last week, the WTS (Women’s Transportation Seminar) International Conference in Toronto, Canada featured a discussion on Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (CTDOT) Connecticut Integrated Transit Mobility Program (CT ITMP) and the Tap & Ride contactless fare payment pilot.

Transit & Rail Project Manager Maggie Maddox presented on the panel, “Transforming Transit: Modernizing Bus Fare Technology for a Better Customer Experience,” which was moderated by Director of Technology PMO Taruna Tayal. The conversation covered the pilot planning, technical overview, performance metrics, procurement considerations, lessons learned, and outcomes from the rider engagement during the pilot. The panelists also presented the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (CTDOT) vision for statewide rollout and factors for other agencies that are considering Tap & Ride for their services. Following the presentation, an engaging question and answer period covered the various technology, procurement, and collaboration challenges and keys to success for other agencies as they pursue a similar vision. The team anticipates multiple peer exchanges following the panel discussion and questions.

The presentation coincided with the successful completion of CT-ITMP's Phase I. After four months, the program’s initial launch was successful, and CTDOT is now working to implement the program statewide. VHB is proud to be working with CTDOT to plan and develop a roadmap for statewide, with VHB developing the Statewide Roadmap. VHB is proud to be working with CTDOT in Phase II to provide statewide rollout program management and support multiple integrated efforts to improve the way transit customers pay in Connecticut.
