The Corden is a transformative multi-family development designed to provide refuge for families displaced by domestic violence. This community includes 62 apartments for low-income households, with 37 specifically reserved for survivors. On site services are provided by a Family Support Program, and residents are able to participate in programs including safety planning, job readiness assistance, financial planning, and children and family wellness.
This development required a collaborative effort to remediate a previously contaminated site and construct housing that meets stringent environmental standards. VHB navigated the necessary local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, turning a challenging site into a welcoming community. Our team conducted thorough site investigations of soil, groundwater, and vapor, and developed and implemented NYCDEP-approved Remedial Action Work Plans and Community Air Monitoring Plans to mitigate environment impacts during construction. This comprehensive approach facilitated the installation of engineering controls and the mitigation of contaminants such as pesticides, metals, and semi-volatile organic compounds. In addition, VHB collaborated with New Destiny during the CEQR, SEQRA, and NEPA processes, helping the client meet the stringent requirements set by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the New York City Housing Authority, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
